As a female math and physics major, I understand the need to encourage our girls to aspire for success in these fields. As a math teacher at Hirsch Metro. HS on Chicago's southside I was made aware of a 'Career Day for Girls' at Northwestern University put on by the university's engineering and applied science schools. I mentioned it to my students -- many boys still tried to go, too -- and put up a sign-up sheet. I already had 15 students signed up after the first day. What really excited me was the fact that more girls from my 2 regular geometry classes signed up than did girls from my honors and law academy classes. This really got me excited. Then I printed out the itinerary for the day. It looks fantastic! The girls will participate in a 45 minute engineering design competition, 2 hours of lab tours where they will get to participate in hands-on activities, and a series of panels that they get to choose from! (The link for this event is http://msgroups.mccormick.northwestern.edu/swe/careerday/careerday.html) I already contacted the Dean of Engineering/Applied Science and she's promised fee waivers for as many of my students who find cost prohibitive (there's a $5 fee to register for the Career Day). However, my students have no way to get to Northwestern and back. What I am asking for is funding for a CTA card for each girl and we will ride the redline from the 79th St. stop up the purple line to Evanston and back. This way the girls have nothing prohibiting them monetarily or logistically from participating!
