I need to attend the Pathfinders Summer Institute to learn the basics of The Jr. Botball Challenge to encourage my 4th grade students in coding and robotics.
My class is extremely resilient. Our school is a true melting pot of cultures, economic statuses, homes, and families. This school is considered high poverty, over 60% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and our entire school now qualifies for free lunch and breakfast. We have over 10 different cultural backgrounds in our classroom with such diversity as Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, Asian, Gambian, and American Indian. Recently while studying Dr. M.L. King Jr., my students answered the question, "What do you think Dr. King would say about our classroom?"
One answered, "He would say that our class is his dream come true.
Which is exactly right. We are such a wonderful mix of persons.
My Project
Creativity is key to becoming a successful lifelong learner. I continue to cultivate my learning and creativity to become an innovative fourth-grade teacher. The Summer Pathfinders Institute will continue to build on my passion for science, creativity, and hands-on involvement in the classroom. I will enhance my computer science skills while collaborating with teachers from around the country. Students will learn how to write code in the C programming language and design engineering.
Learning to code improves computational thinking skills and problem-solving, which both relate to improved math performance and problem-solving skills.
Students will also get real-life direct applications of the engineering design process. Participants gain valuable practice with; Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Collaboration, Analytical Skills, Adaptive Learning/Flexibility, Creativity/Innovation and Communication.
Technology is continually developing; as an educator, I am committed to the development of teaching my learners appropriate 21st-century skills. These skills promote creative thinking and hunger for learning.
The teacher creates the climate for the classroom, when I am excited about a new learning concept, my students are excited as well. This is especially true for elementary students. I believe all students should be given opportunities to create and direct their own learning. When they have some input on what they want to explore, they come to school eager and excited about learning.
Your support for this project is greatly appreciated.
