A room full of 27 first graders may seem like a daunting task to some, but to me, it is truly a way to live! All day, I get to be surrounded by learners who have a genuine love for learning that is demonstrated by their investments into collaborative projects, inquisitive and meaningful questions, and eagerness to participate in any and all activities.
These little scholars have, year after year, ignited my passion for teaching.
But, more than that, they have ignited my passion to teach the way THEY learn! Finishing up my third year teaching, I have come to realize that children love and more quickly learn through kinesthetic approaches. I often teach math facts, phonetic patterns, and even writing structure through song, dance, and movements. It has truly been a game-changer in our classroom! Just walk in and you'll see students breaking out in our writing structure song during our “peer editing train.” Or, perhaps you’ll see a group of kids on the playground reviewing a phonetic pattern through our “ai/ay” cheer.
They have truly made me a lifelong learner and I, in effect, would love the opportunity to attend this professional development!
My Project
I am looking to increase my teaching toolkit by attending a professional development conference put on by many different educators from around the country. This two-day conference will showcase current researched based strategies that will take my classroom engagement to a new level.
Learning from the entire Get Your Teach On crew and gaining insights on their best practices and teacher successes, will help me in my journey to becoming a better teacher for all of my students, present and future.
I am looking forward to learning from the conference co-founders, Hope and Wade King, whose book, “The Wild Card,” inspired me to up my teaching game! As they said, “In the game of life, children have no control over the hand they are dealt. You, as a teacher are the wild card that can make a difference in your students’ lives.”
Help me attend this two-day conference and continue my journey to being The Wild Card for my students!
