My students are ninth-through-twelfth graders at a suburban high school outside Birmingham, AL. Our theater program is rapidly growing, but our shows have hit a few bumps in the road this year: we lost a day of our musical to severe weather threats and cancelled our entire spring show the day of opening because of COVID-19. Through it all, their spirits remain upbeat and motivated.
This fall we won Best in Show at our state theater competition.
My thespians are driven, and I have an excellent group of student leaders. Every year we perform a fall competition play, a winter musical, and a spring play. This fall my students are creating their own devised theater piece. We haven't yet chosen our musical, but in the spring they will be producing an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing set in the 1920s with a new script written by students.
My Project
Usually this workshop is held online in New York City, which makes it prohibitively expensive for a teacher from Alabama. With the workshops being held online this summer, I will be able to attend from home and then turn around and share what I've learned with my students.
I hope this series of training will strengthen our productions and enrich the learning experience kids have while participating in them.
I can enhance our musical theater unit with information I learn in the Hamilton workshop, strengthen playwriting activities such as our mini musical and monologue writing units using skills and exercises I learn from John Cariani's workshop, learn choreography to teach my students for our winter musical, and more.
