My students need Kindle Fires, Aurora Plush, Laser Tag Guns, Mag-Genius Blocks, Nerf Footballs, R.E.V. Cars, Squishies, and other items for our class store.
I am the lucky teacher of 23 amazing, smart, fun, energetic, artistic, creative, and amusing third graders. We live in a small, rural community. Our school has a diverse culture. Included in our boundary is a Native American reservation from which a good part of our student body comes.
Our students all qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
Even though our cultures and economic situations are varied, our school is a welcoming place of learning, working together, and providing the best for our children.
My Project
My students need fun items to be able to purchase from our class semester store. Throughout the semester my students earn play money for various reasons, such as good behavior, attendance, academics, being respectful and showing good character.
Earning "money" at school is a great way to learn financial literacy skills.
Students have to count their money each week. Then when the semester ends they are able to purchase items that they can afford. Beforehand I show the students the store items that will be for sale. These include a Kindle Fire, Laser Guns, Plush Animals, Squishies, Blocks, REV Cars and Nerf Footballs. Seeing the items allows them to have a desire to want to work hard to earn enough money to purchase the particular item that they want. They have to learn how to save and budget.
Store is a simple and fun way to teach students about the value of money, about the importance of hard work and about the need to save and spend wisely.
