My Students

Working at Utah Military Academy has been the single best surprise in my career as an educator. The commitment to creating and maintaining a positive social/emotional learning environment is evident in the success and resilience of our students. We have a unique opportunity to work with students who may not have been successful at other schools and provide them with the support they need in order to achieve more than they have elsewhere. We are able to accomplish this by creating an emotionally supportive environment and a commitment to restorative justice. We host weekly meetings in order to identify struggling students and subsequently provide supports in the social, emotional, economic and access domains. As students progress and become aware of their agency, the military culture begins to work its magic by creating motivation to achieve.

My Project

Many of our students continue to isolate at home and are often passing time with passive internet consumption. As students learn the art of audio recording and production, they will soon find themselves feeling inspired to create rather than consume. Our recording project will partner with our Hope Squad (Suicide Prevention Team) to produce student led videos with positive messages aimed at uplifting our school community. There are so many great moments happening at our school at any given time. This project will help us promote and communicate the positive while helping us maintain a supportive and connective social/emotional learning environment.
