My students need help regulating their bodies. Flexible seating, chewy necklaces, putty and a big bean bag chair can help children have the sensory needs met in an appropriate way!
The students in my classroom come to school busy and eager to learn! They love to move, explore and express themselves! I am proud to share a beautiful Montessori environment with them everyday and love to help them discover and build their knowledge.
Cherokee Heights is located on the West Side of St.
Paul. Many generations of families on the West Side have attended school here. We are currently transitioning to a Montessori school.
All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many students come from homes that speak a language other than English.
My Project
Many of my students want to be ON THE MOVE, they are looking for constant sensory input. Often times they find it in ways that are not helpful for learning! Sometimes when the chair starts to feel a little too hard, they fall out of it or stop working and get up. Many children look for oral stimulation by chewing on their clothes, pencils or their finger nails. Often times when it is time to sit at the circle for a group lesson, children struggle to sit calmly.
Providing the children with opportunities to have their sensory needs met in a more appropriate way will increase the amount of time they are able to stay on task!
The wobble seats will provide a more comfortable chair for children who find it too hard. The chewy necklaces will help children keep their clothes dry and fingers in tact! The putty will help children regain focus and composure! The wiggle discs can help students stay seated calmly on the floor during group lessons. The bean bag chair can help students have a soft comfortable place to reset when things are difficult. All of these items would make a huge impact in the level of comfort my students experience on a daily basis!
