Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a special day class in an exceptional elementary school that receives Title I funds in the Los Angeles area.
Our classroom is full of unique, enthusiastic learners who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in grades Transitional Kindergarten through Second Grade.
Students enjoy expressing themselves by participating in daily classroom routines. Our language arts and mathematics routines include reviewing letters, sounds, counting, etc. as a group. They enjoy participating through singing familiar songs and through kinesthetic learning activities.

My Project
Students will interact with these materials daily. Students benefit from engaging with different sensory materials like kinetic sand and slime. These are tools that can be used to help students with self-regulation needs, such as calming down when upset. Handling kinetic sand and slime is soothing for many children. They are also very exciting and can be used to motivate students to complete non-preferred tasks. Additionally, fidget toys help students to focus during instruction. Students hold these objects in their hands while working in whole or small groups. It is important that fidget toys are durable as they are used throughout the school day and can wear easily.
