Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are often limited to their own world, which doesn't include a lot of diversity. Due to the fact that 99% of the students at our school come from low-income households, they don't always have the resources they need to expand their knowledge. Many of my students have faced trauma and difficulties at a young age. I have had students tell me that they don't have electricity at home, or that their parent lives "far away." Many of my students don't have anyone to support their academic or emotional growth at home due to conditions outside of their control.
Despite the many obstacles they face, my students work hard to improve their future.
They are a curious group, eager to learn new information and skills. They love getting to know more about the world outside of their neighborhood. They love coming to school, as many of them vocalize during our daily closing circle times.
My Project
My group of firsties loves to read and they love being read to! Using these books, I will be able to engage them in conversations around self-regulation and self-control. Many of my students lack self-control, which greatly affects our day-to-day learning.
By reading these books to my students, I will have a chance to open up their minds and have the difficult conversations about learning self-control and self-regulation.
Students will have a chance to connect to the challenges that the characters in these books face and learn from how the characters deal with the challenges. Social-emotional learning is just as important, if not more important, as any academic subject, especially in the lower primary grades.
