The students I teach come in every day full of energy and ready to learn, in spite of the various challenges and obstacles that they face. They approach each activity and assignment with a genuine curiosity and eagerness to learn. Unfortunately, the many social situations and behavioral expectations that they encounter in the school day can get in the way of their learning if they are not able to appropriately handle those situations.
Every one of them is unique and special, and they make every day in the classroom an exciting experience.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds with different home environments, yet they all come to school every single day, ready and excited to learn. Our school is a kindergarten through fifth grade building with special education units. We have over 700 students in our building. We are a Title I school, and our free and reduced-price lunch rate is 40.7%.
My Project
This project contains a variety of books that cover varying behavioral situations that may come about in a classroom. These will be used in our morning meetings to discuss appropriate ways to react and respond to different things in the classroom environment.
The Ohio Department of Education defines social-emotional learning as, "the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions."
Social-emotional learning has become increasingly important for today's students, and the state of Ohio (where I teach) has developed learning standards to help ensure students are receiving these important skills. These books will be a stepping stone to this learning in our classroom.
