Self Regulating and Sensory Solutions for Behavior Management
My students need a corner of the classroom where they can access sensory and self regulating tools to help them succesfully manage their day and focus on their academics.
My students are in a self contained Spanish Immersion classroom where 50% of their curriculum is to be learned in Spanish, which for most is their second language and 50% in English.
Their enthusiasm, hard work ,and perseverance is evident as they not only are rising up to the challenges with Common Core and all of the new expectations but are doing so in a second language.
My students jump at the opportunity to share skills they have obtained with others. They are creative and opened minded willing to learn new skills or techniques. There is such a diversity of basic needs for students to have the ability to be focused and learn that I am excited obtain the necessary resources in the classroom tod help them manage the variety of challenges and needs.
My Project
Not all students learn the same and have different sensory needs. Sensory tools are important in the classroom as they are intended to promote regulation, improve focus, increase participation, and therefore making students available for learning!
When you include sensory supports or tools in a classroom, they will be used differently by kids depending on what their bodies need, when they need input, and how they choose to use the tools!
This is the key to a sensory-informed classroom allowing students to be supported in the various sensory needs allowing them to focus on their academic goals.
Several alternative seating to replace traditional chairs are needed to allow students who are physically finding it challenging to be in a desk all day. In addition furniture risers are on the list to create a "standing table" and several fidget supports for students who are needing to constantly be moving. The colored strips are for students who are visual challenged to track reading words and dealing with light contrast. Some of the other sensory support tools like sensory sand, sensory tray, water beads, stress and balls are for supporting students with alternatives to help self regulate and manage stress. The golf balls are to assist in noise regulation. The audible countdown timer is for students in need of more support in time management and transitions.
I am hoping to use these sensory tools in a way that they are naturally embedded into the existing school day which will make them more likely to be used by more than just my sensory students, therefore decreasing the social stigma of needing something “different” which all students will benefit from!
