My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Maine, where approximately 50% of the school population receives free or reduced-price lunch. Our school provides some students with a needed food for weekends, and our school runs a food pantry for our families. We have a school garden and greenhouse, where students can learn how food gets from the garden to a table. Despite some hardships, the students in my classroom are eager to learn and do their best. I love teaching my students and helping them blossom into successful lifelong learners.

My second grade students arrive at school every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited to take on the day's challenges.

I tell my students everyday, "I believe in you.", "I am not going to give up on you.", and "You can do it." My classroom has two themes. One theme revolves around growth mindset ~ the power of the word YET. Instead of saying, "I can't do it." We say, "I can't do it...YET." The second theme is mindfulness. It is essential that my students know how to calm their bodies and minds, because students are better able to access learning in the classroom.

My Project

In the classroom, it has been observed that students who are unable to regulate themselves are not sufficiently prepared to participate in self-initiated and independent learning opportunities.

It is essential that my students know how to self-regulate in order to calm their bodies and minds and choose actions in their best interest.

When students can self-regulate, they are better able to access learning in the classroom. I have selected a variety of materials to help my students learn some new strategies and skills to ultimately independently self-regulate in school and in life.

Within any given classroom, students experience different emotions and different levels of focus. It is necessary to teach children the skills and strategies that they require in order to be focused and engaged learners during the hours they spend in the classrooms. I plan to use the selected books to directly teach children strategies to self-regulate. These skills and strategies are not innate, they need to be explicitly taught. The students will use some of the sensory tools I ordered to help focus during direct instruction.

The literature that has been selected is full of clear, concrete examples of appropriate self-regulatory strategies. I am hopeful that by using the exercises and techniques from the guide book and selected resources, that I will reach the children who need it, so that they can learn how to independently navigate their world in order to be successful kids.

Research suggests that being able to self-regulate will not only help students to experience greater academic success, but may also contribute to the entire school experience being more enjoyable for our students. There is so much more to our world than just academic learning. If this project is funded, it will make a positive life changing difference to my students.
