This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm sure you are well aware of the many challenges that a student in a high poverty, urban middle/high school face. Those are the challenges of my students. We are a seven to twelfth grade, public, STEM school. As you can imagine, our students receive government assistance for their basic needs like shelter and food. Despite so many challenges in their personal lives, they are eager to learn and desperate for an environment where they can safely express who they are. Given the chance, these kids will really surprise you!
My Project
I have done this computer-manipulated self-portrait for many years. It is always the hit of the year with students, staff and parents. However, the paper wrinkles when the paint is sponged on and it inevitably is ripped or ruined. If they had real canvas panels, they could have a piece of art that they would really value.
A self-portrait for our students is something they really value.
I want them to see how we value their self-portrait by giving them appropriate materials. I know this will be a project they take home and hang up in their homes; that is, after we show them off in the school.
