Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried to create a realistic self portrait of yourself? It's hard! Many times you can't remember the exact features of your face or find the right color to represent your skin color. These materials will give students the advantages necessary to create amazing self portraits!
My students are emergent writers, they are learning what it means to tell elaborate oral stories in written form through drawing and words.
Kinders LOVE to draw and produce works of art, many come to school already proficient artists! My students believe their work is important and deserve to have materials that reflect that importance and attention to detail!
My Project
Giving students these supplies will help them examine the things they want to draw--colors and textures--and have adequate materials to represent them on the page. The colored pencils and markers come in skin-tone colors and the pastels allow for precise details to be represented on the page. The mirrors allow students to examine their own facial features--this examination of something familiar will show students how to apply with other subjects. Authors Elena Bodrova and Deborah J. Leong said, "Drawing can increase a child's awareness of her thinking [and] as the child learns more about the object, his drawing will change, reflecting his newfound understanding." This examination and representation is critical for emergent writers. It promotes deeper thinking and questioning within the child causing them to be careful and thoughtful about what they put on paper. Students have an opportunity to understand the importance and care required to make meaning out of writing.
Emergent writers express their ideas and stories through drawing, teachers must acknowledge the importance of drawing!
The materials requested in this project support the students' attention to detail and seriousness of their work by giving them every advantage to create something amazing!
