This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This year I have been able to give my students a wonderful gift-the gift of art. I am a teacher of 8 great students with mental impairments at our school, Whistler, on the far South side of Chicago. At our school we do not have an art teacher and all art is done with the classroom teacher within each individual classroom. I have been blessed to offer different mediums to my students this year including paper and paint. They have enjoyed both types of projects with much success. My favorite part about doing art with my class is the self-esteem boost that it gives this special kind of student.
At this point I want to help my student's artistic ability grow even more by introducing them to art projects based on actual living things. My vision is that my students be allowed to see the life cycle of a butterfly in the classroom. As the butterflies change and grow we will document these changes using the medium of the student's choice. This will give my students a way of making a scientific observation report in spite of the fact that they may be a non-reader or non-writer. I believe art can be a great way to demonstrate an understanding of a concept.
For this project we would need butterflies, a butterfly tower and a few miscellaneous art supplies, including crayons, colored pencils, markers, a pencil sharpener for colored pencils. These supplies will allow me to offer the students a variety of medium choices for this project.
