Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Middle School is an exceptionally difficult time for adolescents but especially for girls. It is at this age that girls undergo changes not only physically but mentally. It is a grueling time with pressures being felt from many groups. Girls are especially prone to the pressures of pleasing others to feel good about themselves. The messages girls receive about how they must act, think, feel and look complicates their surroundings even more. I have noticed in my years at my school that there is a group of girls each year struggling with the adjustments of adolescence but that this change is complicated by their lack of physical activity. They don't quite fit in with others and have extremely low self-esteem. This negative image of themselves is tied directly to their overweight bodies and/or their negative feelings of themselves. I would like to form an after school group of girls (no more than 20) who would meet once a week for an hour. During these weekly sessions, I would focus the girls around themes and emphasize issues including Nutrition, Weight Management, Exercise (through Dance and Yoga) and Self Esteem.
