Help me give my students financial literacy like Warren Buffett by helping them to save their quarters one National Park at a time.

My students are children who remind me of the people that Alicia Keys sings about in her song "Underdog." They're children who often believe that they'll "never make it," but I know they're "built to break the mold." They're children who have dreams that are worth chasing. They're children who have been exposed to at least one Adverse Childhood Experience, but still have a sense of why family is important. They're children who deserve the opportunity to learn about financial literacy and the African Americans who may have struggled but continue to rise up. Many are children, who are growing up learning that family is the "foundation" of African American life and history. They're children who know that "Family is the anchor that holds them through life's storm." They know that "family isn't always blood. It's the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you're." My students know that "A person's own family is, without doubt, the greatest wealth that they'll ever possess."
My students are children who will "Keep on keeping at what you love...You'll find that someday soon enough...You will rise up!"
When personal finances & their basic skills are taught at a young age, children are more likely to grow up & have fewer problems with debt & credit later in life. My students struggle with identifying coins because children today don't have that many encounters with currency at the hands-on level. My students are growing up with the mindset...you just put a plastic card into an ATM machine & get money or use credit cards, gift cards, PayPal & Venmo. They don't know the difference between a penny, nickel, dime, quarter & half dollar because that is not the currency their generation is using...even their lunch accounts - parents put money on the account & they've access to purchase anything their hearts desires. Besides not seeing currency frequently, learning about money is a challenging skill set...you must be able to count by 1s, 5s, 10s, 25s, & 50s plus then be able to combine those skills together to find out how much they have in all or count back to make change. Well, we talked about identifying, counting & spending money, but we haven't even touched on saving, budgeting or earning interest. Now imagine, if all of my 2nd graders had the opportunity to learn how to collect or save 117 quarters to fill their National Parks Commemorative Quarters Collector's Map Book...they would have the chance to save $39.25 each & learn how each quarter they find adds up over time. They'll also have the chance to learn about our country's National Parks.
"Teaching kids how to handle money is about more than dollars and cents...It's about character & responsibility."Through this project, my students will learn many vital life skills like making choices, scarcity, saving, budgeting, market price, money vs. trade & comparison shopping to name a few.
