My school is located in the heart of Southwest Detroit in Michigan. Our school is a K- 2nd-grade building. We have 150 1st graders in our building. We are a Title I school. Ninety-nine percent of our students receive free lunch. Most of our students come from low socioeconomic disadvantaged homes and are first-generation citizens with parents that have limited English language skills.
"Si Se Puede" (Yes, We Can) is our motto and what I truly believe and hope to instill in my students too.
My students come to school with a growth mindset, an eagerness to learn and the belief that anything is possible if they work hard enough for it.
My classroom is made up of 24 students. 92% of my students are ELL or Second Language Learners. The majority of my students have health problems, have social/emotional problems, low academics, and have very limited vocabulary both in English and in Spanish, but with the right support and guidance, they can achieve their goals and aspirations.
My Project
My students will benefit from this hand2mind VersaTiles Literacy Classroom Set because it will give them a better sense of independence. The majority of my students are capable of working independently but need a lot of reassurance that they are able to do hard things.
These VersaTiles will help guide my students through literacy comprehension and allow them to self-correct in a fun way.
They will be able to use these during whole group instruction, as an independent literacy center, working with a partner during independent time, or as an early finisher activity.
