At Kolb Elementary, all students are lifelong scholars, problem-solvers, and future leaders of the world. We have great aspirations and set high expectations for ourselves. We are continuously learning, practicing, and DOING OUR BEST in our roles of CARING for others and being RESPONSIBLE scholars and members of our community. Along our way to solve problems in this world and to serve our community, we sometimes forget the most important people in our lives – OURSELVES!
Though one may assume that we live in (or very close to) paradise in Dublin, California, our lives still come with challenges.
For most students in Kolb Elementary, our challenges come in the forms of academic demands, high expectations, packed schedules, and the desire to be our own problem-solvers. We pack quite a few responsibilities onto our plates and definitely need to take care of ourselves first so we can better care for others. The question remaining is: How?
My Project
STEAM is all the rage, that's true. But, all STEAM and no SEL make us stressed and act out! SEL stands for Social Emotional Learning. SEL is all about communication skills, recognizing emotions in others and ourselves, empathy, navigating our social world, and managing our behaviors. SEL is something that we have long depended on families to teach (even if we didn’t have a name for it). Now, classroom teachers and counselors collaborate to lead the way in schools! We teach students communication and self-regulation skills and strategies. The kit helps our students put these skills and strategies to use. The end results are fewer disruptive behaviors, fewer disciplinary issues, more time focused on learning, and more energy for STEAM!
By now, you may be asking, “What does a box of toys have to do with SEL?” Let's be clear: the items in this kit are not toys.
They are TOOLS to help us self-regulate and self-manage so we can return to learning as quickly as possible. For example, the liquid motion timer provides a calming visual for students who may need a few minutes before a presentation. The puffer ball just may be the outlet for another student who needs to get those nervous energies out and focus on the math test. In addition to the items on our wishlist, our kit will also include:
Communication cards with step-by-step guide to appropriately express our feelings to others;
Self-regulation cards with deep-breathing and meditation guide, and;
Encouragement cards to be created by students and shared with class via the kit.
