This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Mrs. G. from Deerfield Beach FL is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 18 subscriptions to Time For Kids Magazine and a tablet to link literature with technology. These resources will also help students to do research, comprehend science themes, and expand their vocabulary.

It is truly a "global market" and as educators, we must prepare students for this technology-based environment. Time For Kids Magazines always presents relevant, scientific issues. A tablet is economical and useful for additional research. These two items will bring students into a collaborative workplace.
My second-grade students are in a school bereft of modern advantages.
The school is about 40 years old, but we keep it clean and tidy. It is in a close-knit community where many of the parents attended this same school and sat in the same classrooms. My students are street tough. They might punch another child one moment, but then suck their thumb the next. Their eyes are open wide as I read a story about Santa or Rudolph, but they worry deeply when a tooth falls out. Our classroom had one, very old, rickety desktop computer that froze up throughout the year. My students balked at using it out of frustration. This year I am applying for grants to get a couple of tablets and modern resources for my students. I want them to feel pride as they work with their teams to research science and social studies projects. There are many golden gems to be found through the Internet and I want the resource of Time Magazine and technology to be available within the classroom.
Our state of Florida has joined with 44 others in teaching the Common Core State Standards. That means that we expect our students to be using current technologies and work with partners to create projects that they can in turn present to their peers. As adults, they must work alongside others, as well. Unfortunately, cut-backs take away funding for these lofty goals, so the teacher must use creativity to meet these demands. Grant writing is a specific task to request tools for the students. This task is an adventure that benefits the student, teacher, and the benefactor! Our great country grows a bit warmer and brighter as we all strive for the excellence found in the voluntary sharing of resources and knowledge. These children WILL appreciate your generosity. Thank you.
My students don't have many chances to interact with a copy of a magazine along with modern technology.
I believe that linking the two resources together will ignite the wonder and excitement of seeking answers to their own questions throughout life. Literature and technology go hand-in-hand to bring knowledge for the 21st century! Tablets are a moderately affordable Internet resource that allow students a hands-on means to navigate the web. This skill is mandatory in today's world.
