Hannah is the leader of the Roots and Shoots club which is a subgroup of our school's science club. Member's grades range from 9th to 12th. This project was created after extensive research into the problems which plastic has been creating for the environment. These students have worked tirelessly in order to raise their cause. They are driven and ambitious and hope to inspire other students to take the environment into consideration and create less plastic waste in school.
We are working on an awareness campaign in the high school exposing students to the evils of plastic through pictures in our school monitors, a film presentation through the Science Club’s Science Cafe, a school news interview, installments in the parent newsletter, a plastic/ trash cleanup in the area and collection of plastic water bottles throughout the school. Further, we are trying to raise the money to install a water bottle filler. All the money raised will go toward this project. For now, we want to get the one water bottle filler. The long-term goal would be to expand the project and raise enough money to get at least one water bottle filler installed in each of the schools in our town.
In Their Own Words
To make this happen, we have identified several options: a Donor's Choose Page; a fundraiser where we will sell reusable water bottles; a Roots & Shoots grant. We are advertising our need for the water bottle filler within the school and community through the use of social media and the school's broadcasting page.
The success of our campaign will be measured in the amount of money raised and the installation of the first water bottle filler. It is crucial that the members of the community support our campaign in order to have success. With this, students in the Roots and Shoots club will be spreading the news about our cause through word of mouth and the school’s social media. Also, each member of the club was asked to sell as many water bottles as possible in order to gather the funds to purchase the water bottle filler. As a group, we will keep track of the number of water bottles sold, amount of money on the Donor's Choose page and the money still needed.
The project is allowing the members of the club as well as members of the greater school community to open their eyes to the growing issues in our environment. The Donor's Choose Funds, along with our Roots and Shoots mini-grant and water bottle sales can be used to support our service learning campaign by aiding us in saving up the funds for the water bottle filler and reducing the amount of plastic. Our town is well kept for the most part, but to keep it this way we must focus on the important problems. Not everyone knows that the amount of plastic in the community is growing rapidly and our school can help to reduce that total.
