My students live in a low poverty, large, urban city. Our school services around 400 students in grades PreK-5. Our district has students from fifty-five countries speaking forty-eight different languages.
With such a diverse student population, we are always looking for ways to foster understanding and acceptance.
Our students have unique perspectives about the world around them and their place in it. We enjoy reading literature that celebrates those differences and opens the door for open and honest conversation about diversity.
My Project
Our students come from fifty-five countries and speak forty-eight different languages. With such a diverse student population, we are always looking for ways to foster understanding and acceptance of those who may have a different outside apperance. Our students would benefit from opportunities to see this diversity in literature as well.
We would like to do a unit on the book Wonder by RJ Palacio.
In short, the novel is about a child with physical deformities and his struggle to find his place among the students of his new school. It is all about acceptance and finding the good in every person. This novel has recently been released as a major motion picture which adds further interest for our students.
