My students' classroom library needs updating. Many books are tattered and torn. Students also need multiple copies of both fiction and nonfiction books, so they may have more opportunities to read and learn together.
My fourth and fifth grade students live in a poor, rural location.
Many of my students rarely travel out of state except by way of their imaginations. My students may not be well traveled, but they are avid readers who truly adore reading. Books help transport children places, fuel their imaginations and their sense of self. As Anna Quindlen wrote, "In books I have traveled, not only to other worlds, but into my own. I learned who I was and who I wanted to be, what I might aspire to, and what I might dare to dream about my world and myself. "
My Project
My students will use the books to learn more about times and cultures both near and far. Many of the books will help support our study of Native Americans. I want students to have multiple copies of fiction and nonfiction books, so they may read and discuss books, learning and sharing the joy of reading together.
These books will provide new destinations for my young readers to travel to and provide for companionship along the way.
Having multiple copies of books will allow my students to experience the joy of reading and learning together. Rather than traveling solo, they will have reading partners to journey alongside them. I think most of us would agree that having a travel companion to share experiences with along the way makes for a richer, more rewarding voyage. This is what I want for my students.
