My fifth grade students are on their last stop in their elementary school career. Teaching them greater responsibility and accountability is an important part of this year. It is essential that they leave here equipped to succeed in a much larger and more demanding educational setting.
I love the energy and enthusiasm my fifth graders have.
I also love it when they tackle a challenge and work hard towards goals we set together or individually. My students get my sense of humor and we can laugh together. They are also ready to take on greater independence. I have been impressed with their ability to adapt under challenging circumstances as we navigate this unusual school year. Our school is a neighborhood walking school and many of the students have gone to school together for several years. They know each other well and work well together, which is also a boon.
Our classroom has many opportunities for students to take charge of their learning and to have ownership in what takes place. My goal is that they will leave my classroom confident and prepared for what lies ahead.
My Project
Our Fifth Grade Science Curriculum involves the study of the cycle of matter through Earth Systems. This project will help me to create a diverse, hands on, memorable learning experience that will be of benefit to all learning styles.
This terrarium/aquarium set will provide my students with the opportunity to observe firsthand the function of five different ecosystems right in their own classroom.
This includes: four terraria and plants to create bog, carnivorous, woodland, and sandhill environments as well as an aquarium. This enables an observational study of various ecological systems.
