My Students

I teach improved speech and language skills to children 2 1/2 through 5 years of age. My students all attend an Early Childhood Special Education Program at my school. Despite a variety of disabilities, each student is brilliant in their own way.

Giving the gift of language to students who do not talk, or to students who are severely delayed, is a most precious gift.

Even though these students are very young, they have the greatest perseverance! I consider my work with these little ones so important. Their future success in their educational career is largely dependent on the language skills they learn in our program.

My Project

Children with Autism have various sensory needs. I'd like to incorporate satisfying those needs in my speech/language therapy room. I'm a Speech/Language Pathologist working in an Early Childhood Special Education Program. More and more of my students every year come into our program with Autism and/or Sensory Processing Disorders. It's essential that our students have their sensory needs met so that they are ready to learn to communicate.

I'd like to create a sensory area in my therapy room where my students can go to feel comforted, calmed and secure while learning to communicate.

Learning to talk can become overwhelming for students who have Autism and/or a Sensory Processing Disorder. This area will offer alternative seating like a large pillow and bean bag chair, along with overhead light filters to soften the fluorescent lighting. This area will also have sensory toys and bins to attract student's attention and keep their focus as they learn essential functional communication skills. Help teach our students to talk!
