My students need sensory tools to help them focus such as fidget toys, a mood light, sensory floor tiles, and a plasma ball to feel better, interact, and do their very best work!
I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth special education students who struggle with reading and writing in a high-poverty, low-income school. My students have various obstacles to their learning: attention deficit disorders (ADD), Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD), Autism, emotional disturbances, language barriers, and more! Many of my students seem like average, everyday kids, but they struggle in their academic pursuits. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom ready to do their best every day.
My students are working hard to reach their goals of successfully acheiving at the same level as their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade peers.
By donating to my project, you will help over 40 students this year and more in the many years I have left as an educator!
My Project
Do you remember sitting in math class and needing to wiggle around without disturbing others? I believe in ensuring all students can find ways to move around when they need to during teaching moments. With the fidget toys, a mood light, sensory floor tiles, and a plasma ball, I can help all students achieve, including those with a diagnosis of autism!
My student population has a higher population of students with autism than in any of my previous years.
Research shows that students with autism can better focus, learn, and interact with others when provided the appropriate sensory tools such as fidget toys and a plasma ball! My classroom, unfortunately, does not currently have any of these tools to help these students with their unique learning needs.
I feel it's my job to make sure that all students will get their needs met. If students feel comfortable in a classroom, they will interact and engage in learning much more than if they feel itchy, fidgety, or anxious. The sensory floor tiles and mood light will help create a comfortable environment.
