Help me give my students increased exposure to people of all abilities, genders and colors within our classroom to build on, and continue, their acceptance outside of the classroom.
I have the privilege of teaching the youngest learners: Preschool students ages 3 - 5. Some of them are entering school for the first time in their lives and others getting ready to head off to kindergarten.
Although my students have special needs they undoubtedly possess tremendous potential to absorb everything possible with repetition, modeling and exposure.
They are honest, funny, serious, capable, curious, accepting and loving. Their view of the world is straight-forward, pure and innocent.
My Project
My classroom is a diverse community however there is obvious room for improvement. Now more than ever I recognize the importance of a diversity of materials for my students to be exposed to daily including a variety of home and community environments, cultures, races, gender-roles through professions and abilities.
My goal is for my students to interact with our donated materials as naturally as they do with the other items around the classroom.
I want them to always see endless opportunities represented through diverse learning materials and literature. They will see and use these toys so naturally that the perspective will transfer into the world around them. A few small sparks started within our walls can certainly ignite a flame.
