Living in rural areas can be challenging. We live in an area that has a limited amount of opportunities for our students. As teachers, we try to find any way that we can to help students break the mold of a rural life and push their creativity and intellect to the maximum. Students are exposed to technology, science, art, and engineering as well as their mathematics, history, and language arts in order to build a better future for themselves and their families.
We strive to take all students, especially those who struggle outside of school, to a place where they are free to express their curiosity and pursue their interests.
We have a large community of families that struggle from paycheck to paycheck. As a school, we provide as much for our students as possible. We try to make sure that they have opportunities that have little outside cost, and give them experience that they cannot find at home. We have a variety of students in different places intellectually but there are very few who do not enjoy a field trip or a good hands-on activity!
My Project
Density is a difficult idea to understand on paper. Density is the amount of stuff (atoms) that is inside of something. Inside of something? How do we see the inside of something? How can we know what is inside of something like oil that makes it float? We may not be able to see inside of the oil but we can compare it to some other liquids to see why some of them 'float' and some of them 'sink'.
This is just one example of a lab where we use test tubes, beakers, syringes, and a scale to make something that looks impossible on paper come to life in front of our eyes!
Students will see the liquids change order and settle according to their density and be able to calculate the numbers to match what we see in the test tubes.
