We are a school district made up of three smaller rural cities. Our district is growing this year which means more need for support of the growing student base. There is a mixture of low income and ELL students which means a need for external support.
Our district has great programs in the secondary buildings including great career-exploration but the district needs to have more exploration for the elementary levels.
The two smaller elementary schools house one section in each grade K-5 and don't have the opportunities for exploration that our large elementary school does due to the size difference. We would like to have more opportunities for the smaller building through makerspaces.
My Project
This is the third phase of our makerspace. The first two focused on items that stay in our space, now we would like to move to projects that students can make and take home. In the process seeing themselves as a maker in the world!
The projects designed with these materials will provide every student with three different opportunities to create and bring home.
First, is a harmonica made from rubber bands, foam, and jumbo popsicle sticks, they make amazing music and are great fun. The next is bead pets that teach them skills to weave and design and can be attached to keys or their backpack. The final project is learning origami. Once they learn this folding technique, they can create so many wonderful things. Other materials will be more creative additions to our space.
Help us continue to grow our space with some more artistic expression while building skills of creativity and critical thinking for the 21st Century. These are skills to help them find themselves as a creator in the world.
