This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school works with families that come from the Haitian communities and that are trying to get on their feet to give their children a better life than where they previously came from. The students I work with every day are the sweetest of kids who only want someone to understand them and be there for them, as mom and dad have to work so hard to provide every day for them.
Our students do not have a lot in life, such as books at home, knowing when their next meal might be, what time mom/dad will be home, and/or if they will have clothes that fit them.
This is their walk of life and the life they are used to living. They know what poverty is and all the feelings that go along with it at such a young age.
Even though these kiddos know so much about struggling, they have the biggest hearts and would give the only shirt they have left to the man on the street. They know what he is going through and they are willing to help others out. They are kind, easy to love, caring and amazing little role models.
My Project
The more children are exposed to different texts that are on their reading level, the larger their vocabulary will grow and the better writers they will become. This will allow children who are behind in reading to start to close the gap and be able to catch up with their other classmates. Having a classroom library with lower-level texts will allow my students to feel more confident in their reading, and they will want to read more. Just getting them to read will be the start of an adventure in filling their gap and showing growth towards mastering reading.
