Seeing the World Through Others' Eyes

My students need 24 copies of Children of War: Voices of Iraqi Refugees to understand that war is something that happens to people like them, not just between unknown groups in far off lands.

My Students

What I love about my students is that they are each very unique. When they reach 9th grade, they are all at very different spots in their development. Their reading levels, interest in education, and personalities are all very different. I love this because it makes it a joy to get to know them over the school year. However, it can also be a challenge to make sure that they are all engaged in the curriculum.

Regardless of their differences, each student has the right to a quality education with a chance to connect to a world that is bigger than themselves.

I want my students to experience what life is like outside of their community. I also want them to be able to connect to what they are learning in the classroom in a way that addresses their specific learning needs.

My Project

Children of War: Voices of Iraqi Refugees by Deborah Ellis is a very powerful book that I believe will have a positive impact on my students. It will give them a chance to see the world differently than what their first impressions have been. It will also help them to become global citizens by learning about other parts of the world and the challenges that other students around the same age as they have faced during the 21st century.

My students deserve a chance to find meaning in their Grade 9 curriculum and they deserve a chance to expand their knowledge about the world.

These books will truly open the door for my students to strengthen their literacy skills as well as make connections across multiple subject areas. My goal is to enable each student to open their minds to something bigger than themselves.
