My Students

I teach in a low socio-economic area of North Carolina. The students I teach are sweet, kind, funny, and giving, even though many of them have very little of their own. Many of my kids have never left the county in which they live. One year we took a field trip to an aquarium an hour away, and guess what they found the most interesting? The ocean!! Many of my kids had never seen the ocean! They went home wet and happy with memories of that special trip.

I want to make more special memories with my children by introducing them to the world, and I think that Scholastic News Magazine is one of the best ways to achieve that goal.

As learners of the English language, my students need and crave exposure to all kinds of non-fiction literature. They love to watch videos and read books and articles about other kids their own age. Their eyes light up when they can make a connection to something we are learning about in class, or to their own lives.

These children have a lot of struggles and hardships in their young lives, but they also have a lot going for them.

My Project

Scholastic News Magazine is a colorful, interesting magazine for children. It has diagrams which helps visual learners with difficult concepts. There are several "words to know" which is vitally important for English Language Learners. Reading and writing skills are enhanced by the graphic organizers, and the "read aloud" feature on the digital offers differentiation possibilities for exceptional children. There is even a Spanish version available!

Scholastic News Magazine will give my students virtual experiences and will encourage their natural curiosity about the world around them.

With this resource made available to my kids, they will become more engaged in their learning, which will in turn help them retain what they learn.

My goal is for my students to remember their fourth grade year as their favorite year of school. I believe that receiving a magazine of their very own will help to accomplish that goal, as well as helping them become better readers and lifelong learners.
