"We forget that microorganisms rule the world. Now we're looking and finding things we didn't know were there!" --- Tara O'Toole.
I want my students to see and understand the world in a new way, by seeing the fascinating world of microorganisms! We need a microscope in which to do this.
I teach 32 fourth graders in a self-contained classroom.
My students come from many different backgrounds (a large number being Hispanic, Punjabi, African American and Asian) and varying family structures. They are 9 and 10 year-old children who will one day make a huge impact on our world. I have taught for over 25 years, and can honestly say that I have never had a group of children more eager to learn and soak up new information. These students come to school prepared and willing to take on the challenges set before them. I am trying to raise the bar, because they are willing to jump over it.
My Project
The microscope I am requesting has the capability of connecting to the computer, so that the entire class can view slides and other items. I have also requested some prepared slides which will help the students really see what bacteria and other microorganisms look like. This will provide a way for my class to really explore and learn about the world, as seen through a different perspective. Most students learn best when given hands-on opportunities to explore the world for themselves. Oftentimes, science is one of the subjects pushed to the back-burner...with reading and math taking precedence. My students need a way in which to explore science, hands-on, by using a microscope so they can see what microorganisms really look like, up close and personal. As we use this digital microscope, we will have a way of enriching the 4th grade science curriculum and solidifying and reinforcing the information which is presented in the textbook on microorganisms.
As an educator, it is my job to provide enrichment activities which will promote a love of learning.
The microscope I am requesting will enable students to see the world through a "different lens." Students get excited by science, and many of my students have expressed a desire to pursue the field of science as a career. I would like to ensure that each student remains enthusiastic about learning more in science.
