Seeing the World in Color

My students need color ink to be able to use illustrations and photographs to help them understand the world around them.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Almost all of my students live in poverty. They come to school with a smile every day when most people would give up. My students have a desire to do well and they want to do well in school. None of my students come into my class and say I don't want to learn today.

I am doing all that I can to help my students not become a statistic.

However; the current statistics show that African American, Hispanic, and low-income students enter 4th grade two years behind and by the time they reach 12th grade they are 4 years behind. Since all of my students are African American and most of them are low-income this gap my be even greater.

My Project

School is ever evolving and ever-changing. More and more of the content that students are exposed to is not in a textbook, but through current events and non-fiction articles. I often provide these resources to my students in black and white. When a student is reading a primary source about the Civil War and everything is gray and does not stand out. My students are missing out on some important details.

The students I teach are seven times more likely to drop out of school than their same age peers who come from families with higher incomes.

I strive every day to help my students and hope to provide them with as much content as I can in the 180 days that they are in my classroom.
