Seeing the History of New York City Through a Second Grader's Eyes
The cost of two digital Kodak cameras from Quill Corporation is $572, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a second-grade public-school teacher. My school is located in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn (a neighborhood in New York City that is underrepresented in school funding).
For the upcoming 2005-2006 school year, I've decided to exhibit the second-grade curriculum through the eyes of my second graders. The second-grade curriculum is packed with opportunities for children to explore the world in which they live, and what better way for the students to explore that world than to take photographs of it and write about them? With this approach, the students will be able to learn about and present for other students the many aspects of New York City, as mandated by the social-studies curriculum. Historical places throughout the city will be photographed and used as a focus in literacy, reading, photography, and journalism. Spanning across the curriculum to science, students will even be able to compose a photo essay of the water cycle in action!
To make these experiences come true, I'm asking for two digital cameras that are easy to operate. I'm anticipating approximately twenty-three students for the 2005-2006 term. Students will have the opportunity to take many photographs, see what they've photographed, and report what has been photographed through the use of a word-processing program.
With your donation, my children will have experiences that will be cherished for years to come. These photo essays will be placed in a portfolio and made into keepsakes for the children. Moreover, many children in the neighborhood in which I teach are given opportunities to see various sights only through school field trips. I want these photographs to open up the world for the entire student body.
Thank you for your support. We truly appreciate your effort.
