Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are second graders who live in an inner-city environment in NJ. Although many of these students experience daily hardship and stress, they come to school eager to learn. My students know that our classroom is a place to learn and explore and persevere. They make me proud to be a teacher.
My students are amazing kids who are learning to fall in love with books and reading.
Some of their favorite characters are Junie B. Jones, and Jack and Annie from the Magic Tree House series. They love these characters, but we need books with amazing characters that my students can relate to more deeply. Most of my students are not white, but almost all of the characters in the books we have are.
My Project
My favorite thing about teaching is getting to share wonderful stories with my students through our daily read aloud. My students will often beg, “Just one more chapter!” We read together every day, as part of our daily literacy lesson, always after lunch and recess to cool down, and sometimes just for fun when we’re really enjoying a book and just have to know what happens in the next chapter. We need books where the main characters are diverse, just like my students. I am requesting multiple copies of each title so that I can reserve one as a read aloud while students can also choose that book to enjoy on their own.
