Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met Roald Dahl.
We are a Title One school in California with over 50% of our students in our English Language Learner programs.
Many do not understand or comprehend the nuances of the English language. My students love to learn through literature and the activities we do. My students love to read out-loud to each other and are learning how to use inflection while they read. Many are able to transfer what they have learned into other areas of our day - writing, science, social studies, math, and art. Roald Dahl's books engage them with his vivid imagination and story line.
My Project
Imagination! How do we turn on our students' imagination? By reading great books that paint vivid pictures in their minds!! Roald Dahl's books are fun, engaging, and full of lessons to be learned. By reading his books, my students will draw/color what they read, discuss the setting/characters/plot of each story and use their math skills as we concoct various recipes that go with each story.
My English Language Learners will continue to see that English is not an easy language to learn and comprehend!
By reading various books by Roald Dahl, all of my students will learn some of the many facets of our language-idioms,similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia as they are transported by Dahl's imagination where children are the heroes of the stories. I hope that by reading Roald Dahl's books, my students' imaginations will be unlocked so that they too can write wonderful stories.
