My students need two optics kits so we can utilize all of our dynamics tracks for optics experiments.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Are you someone who uses optics every day? I am willing to bet that you are. But, do you understand how the lenses you might use to see work? Or why a flat mirror is different than a curved one? Well, that is what I want our students to see and understand.
My school is a large high school (1400 students) in a rural area.
The older, and now smaller, of two comprehensive high schools in my district. We are a growing school, and the Physics classes are getting larger, so the need for quality materials is becoming critical.
My students are predominately second language, and most (about 70%) qualify for free lunch. But these students are great. Many do not have parents who have gone to college, so a major focus of our school is in preparing students to think about going on with education after high school.
My Project
Currently, we have one optics kit. This allows us to do experiments as whole class demonstrations. But, by adding two additional optics kits to the dynamics systems we already use in class, we will be able to conduct optics experiments, such as image formation with lenses and light intensity vs. distance, in smaller groups, rather than the entire class at once. We will even be able to use the kit to build a basic telescope. Since the parts of the optics kit snap on to the track, we will be able to move the track, with the experiment in progress, and not disrupt what is being viewed. The three lenses are permanently mounted in plastic supports so they will be very durable, and the light source is LED-based, so that it uses less energy and is cool to the touch. These optics kits are an important addition to the class.
The ability to inspire our the students of today so see their future.
Is that too much to ask? By adding these kits to our classroom we will be able to shine light on an interesting topic. These hands on materials will help them see how optics affect their lives.
