Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our eager little Texans are from low SES families, some bilingual/bicultural, in pre-k and kindergarten, yet already exhibiting gaps in reading comprehension and math basics due in large part to communication deficits. (Some families speak limited English so access to vocabulary and communication for these students is a real challenge.) Add to that other health and learning difficulties and you have some extraordinary obstacles our sweet youngsters face.
Our students want to write, draw, and create with tools, fabrics, colors, paints, and read books that feature characters with skin like theirs.
We can blend and combine paints to achieve that diversity; and still, I know I can do better with resources that have been developed expressly for this purpose.
My Project
These resources will be used to read and learn about cultures from around the world as well as celebrate the differences we have in the people in our own school and community. The books will be just the beginning of a continually-growing library that represents the multicultural families in our neighborhood and school. The more students see people of all types and backgrounds in their reading and are able to represent themselves and family in their drawings, we can have those conversations about differences, race, and what ties us all together!
