Seeing Our Lives Through Literature

My students need literature they can connect to; that's why we need to read The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.

My Students

My students are AWESOME. My students are true thinkers. My students are hungry for knowledge--a specific type of knowledge. My students are primarily students of color. They feel invisible when reading literature. My students want to learn about themselves through literature. They want to identify with characters we read about. They are fed up because traditional canonical literature robs them of that experience. My students challenge me in ways that I never knew they could. My students are the future!

My Project

Why can't more students of color read about characters who look, think, and sound like them? I want my students to have the experience of being able to be excited when they're reading an assigned novel in school. I want students to feel empowered, to feel like they have a voice. I want them to feel like they have a place in life, especially in my classroom. If I had the honor of teaching the novel The Hate U Give, it will allow me to accomplish all of these things. I plan to explore the book in ways that allow students to think outside the box while analyzing a relatable and relevant text.
