Each morning I stand outside the door of my classroom with a smile on my face ready to greet the 30 students who will walk through the door at 7:15. Each of them come with a different home life and weight that they carry from their personal lives. Some walk in having not eaten since they left school the day before, some walk in after listening to fighting or babies crying all night and they themselves got very little sleep, but all come into my room excited and ready to learn.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and their needs vary!
I teach 4th grade in an intercity, high poverty school. I have 30 students in my class. Of those 30 students, 18 of them need extra services in order to make it through their day. 88% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch at school. All of my students receive free breakfast.
No matter what baggage they carry from home, each of my students bring their own level of energy, enthusiasm, and passion to the classroom with minds set on the future and the life they envision for themselves.
My Project
My student population is extremely diverse and I am often reminded of how they are mirroring the world around us.
When students can "see" themselves in books, they can relate to characters, make connections, develop empathy, and learn traits like perseverance.
By adding the books for this project to our classroom library, I can help provide experiences for my students to see themselves in the characters of books and meet the diverse needs of my diverse learners!
Outside of the school library, most of my students do not have access to books. Many students at my school come from a low-income household. By building my classroom library, students will have easy access to quality children's literature every day.
My hope with a variety of diverse books is that students are able to find themselves within a text, and they are also able to learn about people different from themselves. My hope is these books will help inspire a life-long love of reading.
