Help me give my students I have listed a lot of books that will appeal to the diveristy of readers in my classroom. It will help them relate to the characters and want to read more.
I teach a group of 29 fifth graders virtually this year. My plan is to provide all students with award winning culturally diverse chapter book appropriate for students reading level, in order to provide an opportunity to learn and identify with other people that may be different they are. Our school system has not received the funding to help teachers provide digital or hard copy reading materials for students that are learning virtually. By providing a hard copy book, all students will benefit by equity and diversity of content which on current curriculum does not provide. Students also face a major reading gap because of Covid and lack of reading materials. Students are not reading enough. They are not as motivated to read due to lack of materials or lack of what is available as a reading curriculum in this online format. Research shows that if students are motivated to read, then students will become more proficient readers. Finding content that will appeal to students, help them relate to characters with our books, and enable students to develop a better understanding about the world they live in.
My Project
These materials will encourage students to read and see themselves in the characters that they read about. They will learn about different cultures, and compare how these stories are the same and different than their own stories may be.
Motivating students to want to read and keeping them reading is the secret to their future success, and helping them see themselves in our books is the first step.
Helping students develop into good readers will help them become successful readers for a lifetime. This project can change lives. Thank you!
