Our music students are some of the best and brightest on our campus! Our music students are dedicated to their craft and work hard to master their instruments. They are committed to stellar attendance, work ethic, and class participation. Our students are made up of diverse socioeconomic groups and various ethnic and racial groups as well. We have students who travel from across the district to participate in the music program here. Throughout the pandemic and online learning, our students have stayed connected and been dedicated to making music.
My Project
As an educator, I connect with my students as we begin to form relationships from day one. I value what each student brings to the table and envision them feeling represented culturally. I respect each child for who they are, and I want my middle schoolers to feel visible and valued and see themselves. I aim to recognize and value my students' identities and help shine a light on who they are and who they may become. What a better way to do this than through music. Music is part of who we are and our life experiences. Music brings us together and connects people.
Music supports culturally responsive teaching as I find ways to incorporate my students' cultures in our classroom community.
Representation of various cultures and backgrounds can be found through the diversity in our curriculum itself.
I am requesting an ALTO SAXOPHONE and accessories to be used for our band classes. We do not currently own any saxophones to loan in our inventory.
Our music curriculum includes music by diverse composers such as Soon Hee Newbold and William Owens. Learning the stories behind the composers and the music is part of understanding the music I teach. This helps us to see ourselves reflected in the composers and musicians whose music we learn to play. These musical instruments make playing in the middle school band possible!
Our students utilize school-provided instruments and equipment every year, and our ability to provide these instruments is a critical part of the success of our music program.
