Mrs. Crowe from Rocky Mount NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students a class set of Two Bobbies, A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, and a bulk set of earbuds.

As a 4th grade teacher, I have the opportunity to expose my students to literature to which they relate. There is a world of books and stories, both fictional and informational, that my students can read in order to help them understand how they share similar experiences with people who live elsewhere.
My students have spent their entire lives in our rural eastern NC community, without the opportunity of seeing that many of our experiences are similar to people in other parts of the country.
Seeing, through literature, and reading about how others have experienced and overcome the same kinds of circumstances that they have in their own lives will help my students see themselves within our learning.
My students come from low income homes, many of which are impoverished. While their parents and families understand the importance of reading, they are not able to provide books. Exposing my readers to great literature within our curriculum has a positive influence on the students' understanding of who they see themselves to be.
Two Bobbies is a precious story of survival during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Using this book as a novel study is a great way to help my students see themselves in the life experiences of others. In addition to using the book, my students will be able to use their Chromebooks to research and learn about how Hurricane Katrina, as well as other catastrophic storms and floods, impacted the lives of those affected in similar ways to their own experiences with storms and flooding. The earbuds I am requesting will help my students stay focused on their individual research and enable them to see/hear actual videos that relate to this topic.
A classroom collection of relevant, high quality literature is my goal for helping my students learn about their own identity, as well as their place within a global community.
