My school is located in a town that has a population of approximately 4,000 residents. My district encompasses the largest geographic area of the county, as it spans to neighboring counties to the west, south and east. My school is a rural school with approximately 600 students for grades 3-5, and more than half of the student population participates in the free or reduced lunch program. I love teaching my Third Grade spunky kids!
My goal is to refine students' fluency and teach students to shift from focusing on decoding words, to thinking deeply about texts.
My goal is to model how to read fluently, to model how to pause to think about the text, model how to apply logic and make inferences in order to make reading meaningful.
My Project
This year's focus is "Thinking while Reading" in Room 802. While students enjoy my dramatic reading of the read aloud texts, they would benefit from being able to see the words as I read them. Dr. Tim Raniski of Kent State University indicates that fluency is the most prevalent source of difficulty for students, and that if fluency is not addressed in elementary school, that problems will likely hinder students in the future. Fluency is the bridge to comprehension in reading.
Students will be able to see the text projected onto the Smart Board as I read aloud to them, thereby allowing them to experience fluent reading being modeled.
Students will be able to take notice of the phonological patterns of words, how authors use text features and be better able to analyze illustrations with the projection on the Smart Board. Students will be able to increase comprehension as we pause to think and analyze the text we are reading together. Our discussions of the text should become more academic and lead to deeper discussions in class. The document camera will also contribute to meaningful writing discussions as we respond to our text in written form. Students will be able to share, discuss and improve their writing with the use of the document camera.
