"The difference between science and the fuzzy subjects is that science requires reasoning while those other subjects merely require scholarship." said Robert A. Heinlein. Each Science class provides teachers with an exciting opportunity to ignite inquisitiveness and encourage reaching a class goal.
Our school district is located in rural Pennsylvania.
It covers approximately 131 square miles and encompasses several townships and numerous small villages and towns. There are no suburban or urban areas within the district. However, the district is located between four urban areas where many residents of the districts work. The district operates an elementary school which houses Kindergarten through sixth grade and a Junior/Senior High School that covers grades seven through twelve. District enrollment stays around 1100 with half the students in each building. Our school tends to be a central part of our community and is the site of activities and events that tie all the smaller communities together. There is a strong sense of pride in the district and support comes from both parents and those without children in our system. We follow a Professional Learning Community model and meet State set AYP levels. We hope projects like this will help us reach a greater level of excellence.
My Project
My students will be able to use the Ken-A-Vision FlexCam 2 Document Camera in our science classes to share their experiments as they happen. The easy to use system has a stable flat stand that will offer a large surface area for fifth graders to work with. It will allow them to share results of experiments in real time while being able to narrate and capture images as well as involve fellow students without the need for rubber-necking.
We have also been dealing with microscopic organisms in our Structures Of Life Unit. These lessons will be greatly enhanced when it is possible for student groups to locate organisms using microscopes and then share their slides without everyone needing to wait their turn in line for a rushed glimpse that inevitably will end up with the microscope being refocused and moved.
The students will also be able to share charts, diagrams and such as they share and explain their ideas with the class in a way that is impossible without this device.
Students must be taught how to use the tools needed in a scientific environment in order to achieve the goals and standards we set forth in national, state and local standards.
The students can demonstrate their competencies and discoveries using this Ken-A-Vision FlexCam 2 Document Camera. They will be able to become the instructor and explain results in an excellent manner using technology to demonstrate their mastery of technological devices.
