Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach four classes full of struggling readers. Some of them are tough guys and some are sweethearts, but they all want to go to college - not even for themselves, but "for my family." If they want to get there (and they CAN!), they need to learn to read. Right now.
My students are 9th graders with little of the academic preparation they need to be on a path to college.
We have a LOT to do. They chose to enroll in a small charter for high school because they want to stay out of trouble, they tell me, and they want to get away from the bad grades and bad influences that were omnipresent in middle school. They want a fresh start.
My Project
A document camera will make many of my lessons much clearer for my students. It is a useful instructional tool for any classroom, but it is especially well suited for my remedial reading class. Many of my students learn visually, and benefit enormously when they can actually see me model filling out a graphic organizer or crafting an exemplar response, rather than merely hearing me explain how to do it. This benefit obviously extends to my MANY English language learners, as well.
I teach a reading class to very sweet, very motivated 9th graders who currently cannot access the material in most of their classes simply because they cannot read the textbooks, the novels, and the word problems.
Any tool that lets them actively READ (rather than just hear) activities, instructions, and examples is a tool that will absolutely help them reach their growth goals for the year. Please fund this project!
