I teach in a small, rural high school that serves a student body comprised primarily of students from low-income homes. Many of my students receive free or reduced lunch because of their low family income. Many of them come from humble beginnings. Some come to school for refuge from what they face at home.
From coming in for extra tutoring after class to creating study groups on their own to checking out copies of my books to read at home, they work hard to grow and obtain their goals. They are a phenomenal group of students who will go far, and I love watching them grow!
My students currently only have small, short right-hand desks in the classroom. Everyone sits at the same height, and students in the back of the classroom have difficulty seeing the board and over the heads of the students in front of them. My students discussed this with me and suggested that we get tall tables with stools to solve this problem! They searched for the best, most cost effective options and decided together on what would be best for our room. They have taken the lead by identifying the problem, proposing a solution, helping create the project, and now they want to share it with their friends and family to make it come to life! Students would be able to see better from heightened tables and stools so that their learning experience is improved!
In Their Own Words
A lot of us have a hard time seeing the board from the back of the room, especially when tall people sit in front of us. Mrs. Skaggs has been very open to letting us give suggestions on what would help us solve the problem. After we talked with her, we decided that we would like to have tall tables and chairs so those of us at the back of the classroom can see over the heads of the kids in front of us. Some of us can't see over other students who sit in front of us, especially when many high school students are very tall. Not being able to see the board negatively affects our learning!
We know that as students, we have the power to make a positive impact on our classroom and school by creating a better place for students like us to learn. Part of this change includes obtaining seats that will allow us to see even from the back of the room.
This project will allow all students in our classroom to sit in a place where they can see, even if they are sitting in the back of the room. We are leading this project by deciding on the best solution to the project (the tall tables with stools that people could also use for standing tables if they want) and by sharing with our friends and family to ask them to help us get the things we need for our room. Being able to see Mrs. Skaggs and the board will allow us to learn the material better and will improve our academic success.
