My students cannot learn unless given the tools to do so. I have been struggling explaining cells and life science to fifth graders that do not have microscopes to learn and explore with. My biggest challenge is having them understand things that they cannot see.
My students are fifth graders of every different ability you can think of.
Our school is great, and we promote learning by doing as much as possible. We have great fifth grade teachers trying to get students excited about science, but its proving to easier said then done.
Our school has 3 fifth grade classes, one of which is a co-teaching science class. Our students have been able to come to the science lab many times and learn by doing. When we discovered we didn't have microscopes, we quickly realized we cannot explain and show things that are too small to see. My students have learned that science is fun and love the hands-on experience that gets them ready for middle school and how a real science experiment works. We do not have equipment that allows these kids to study cells and microorganisms that they cannot see.
I am requesting a microscope so students can come up and see real bacteria, living cells, and microorganism. My lab does not have science equipment that these students need to continue their learning. These slides will let us uncover things that we don't understand and cannot see. The circuit maker will allow us to safely explore circuits which is another concept we are having a hard time understanding. My students will be able to work in groups and put together circuits that they have designed and created. They will help them fully understand how energy works and how important circuits are in our everyday lives.
These donations will help my students see and do things they normally would just be able to read about.
It is very difficult to expose elementary aged students to microscopes and small organisms without a way to view them. They laser game as well as the circuit maker will allow my students to explore more higher level information and to excite them when they are able to create their own circuit and see how it works.
