I am a high school Physical Science and Chemistry teacher at East St. John High School in Reserve, LA. My school has approximately 1500 students with around 70% qualifying for free lunch. Our school received over 400 students following Katrina and I currently have 10 displaced students in my classes. I began teaching at East St. John after Hurricane Katrina and one major goal I have for all my students is for them to make connections between what we learn in class and their daily life. I want my students to be able to see pictures of ocean waves when learning about transverse waves, see a working diagram of hydrogen fission in a power plant when describing nuclear reactions, and have access to head shots of famous scientists we study. I believe one of the most important ways for my students to succeed in science is to have opportunities to see the material in action - an experience a textbook cannot provide and something that is not always reproducible in the lab. An LCD projector would allow students to learn from PowerPoint presentations (complete with pictures and visuals) and video clips that demonstrate certain scientific concepts. Also, having more visual aids will give students with different learning styles better access to class material. I know my students are able to master the required content for their classes and providing them with more than one way to absorb and process the information can only help their achievement rate.
